My Morning After Photo

We planned our trip to New York City months ago, purchasing tickets for the Wednesday, November 6 Matinee at the Music Box Theater. The show was Suffs, a musical about the Suffragist Movement – an especially fitting choice for the day after Election Day. After voting early at Keeney School, we headed to New Haven to catch a train to the city.

On Wednesday morning, still weary from staying up late watching the election results, I set out on an early morning bike ride to quiet my mind. Pedaling down to 46th Street and 1st Avenue, I arrived just as dawn broke over the UN Gift Garden and took this photo.

The majestic Peace Monument is silhouetted against the rising sun, with Brooklyn’s skyline as its backdrop. This 18-foot bronze sculpture, created by Antun Augustincic in 1954 and restored in 2017, shows a woman riding a horse with her cloak flowing behind her. She holds an olive branch in one hand and a globe in the other, symbolizing movement and hope for global peace. The statue rests on a 33-foot pedestal made from marble sourced from Croatia’s island of Brač.

Thank you for sharing Chris, there is certainly a lot of symbolism in that photo the day after the election.
