The Town of Iron Toys: Mechanical Banks of Cromwell’s J. & E. Stevens Company
The Manchester Public Library is pleased to host Cromwell’s Town Historian Richard Franklin Donohue to speak on iron mechanical banks of the J. & E. Stevens Company on Wednesday, December 8, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. at the Whiton Branch Library on 100 North Main Street.
In 1869, the J. & E. Stevens Company of Cromwell began making iron banks that performed an action when coins were deposited into them. Mechanical banks quickly became popular with both children and adults throughout America and beyond. Today, mechanical banks are highly collectible and sell for thousands of dollars at auction. Join Donohue as he demonstrates his collection of mechanical banks and explains their history and the amusing tales that inspired their design.
